+ 2011 Guide to the Weeks Preceding Orthodox Great Lent +
The Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee (ΤΕΛ. & ΦΑΡΙΣ. on the Greek calendar) falls on the 31st of January and the following week is fast free so that we do not take pride in our ascetic labours.
The Sunday of the Prodigal Son (ΑΣΩΤΟΥ
on the Greek calendar) falls on the 7th of February and during the
following week the fasting is on the usual days. This is the last
week in which meat is allowed, before the Fast starts.
The Sunday of the Last Judgment (Meatfare) (ΑΠΟΚΡΕΩ
on the Greek Calendar) falls on February 14th. It is the last day
for eating meat, before the Fast, and the following week dairy, eggs,
fish, oil and wine are allowed.
The Sunday of Forgiveness and the Expulsion of Adam and Eve
from Paradise (Cheesefare) (ΤΥΡΟΦΑΓΟΥ
on the Greek Calendar) falls on February 21st and is the last day
before the strictest possible fasting (ξηροφαγία
- dry-eating) is kept for the entire next week, until oil and wine
are allowed on the following Saturday and Sunday.
All the dates above are given according to the Orthodox
Church Calendar.
